Diabetes

Diabetes: Is a life-long disease characterized by high levels of sugar in the blood. It can be caused by too little insulin (a hormone produced by the pancreas to regulate blood sugar), a resistance to insulin, or both. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps glucose to enter all the cells of the body. With diabetes, sugar builds up in the blood instead of moving into the cells to be used as energy. Too much sugar in the blood can lead to many health problems, including heart disease and damage to the nerves and kidneys. There are two main types of diabetes mellitus:

Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body doesn’t produce any insulin. Without insulin, the body is unable to use glucose for energy.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes mellitus. About 95% of people diagnosed with diabetes have Type 2 diabetes. In Type 2 diabetes, the body produces insulin, but it doesn’t produce enough or the cells do not use the insulin.

Diabetic neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes, which may cause temporary or permanent damage to nerve tissue. Nerve injuries are caused by decreased blood flow and high sugar levels in the blood. This damage makes it hard for the nerves to carry messages to the brain and other parts of the body. It can cause numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, muscles to atrophy (decrease in size) making it difficult to walk, and pain.

Diabetic retinopathy is a serious sight-threatening complication of diabetes. It is caused by progressive damage to the tiny blood vessels that nourish the retina. They leak blood and other fluids that cause swelling of the retinal tissue and clouding of vision. In some people, the blood vessels may swell and leak fluid. In others, abnormal new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina. If left untreated, diabetic retinopathy can cause blindness. Studies have shown that controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol can reduce the risk of vision loss as well as help your overall health.
