Angina Symptoms

Angina (angina pectoris) is chest pain or discomfort that occurs when an area of the heart doesn’t get enough oxygen rich blood. Angina itself is not a disease; it is a symptom of an underlying heart problem, the most common being coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD is a condition in which fatty material (plaque) builds up on the inner walls of the coronary arteries, causing the arteries to become narrow and stiff (atherosclerosis). When the flow of blood is reduced, the delivery of oxygen and vital nutrients to the heart is impaired, causing pain. Occurring equally in men and women, nearly 7 million people in the United States suffer from angina. It can be a sign of heart disease, even when initial testing shows no evidence of CAD.Angina is usually felt as uncomfortable pressure, heaviness, tightening, squeezing or aching across the chest, particularly behind the breastbone. The discomfort may also be felt in the neck, jaw, shoulder, back or arm. It is often experienced during exercise, emotional stress, extreme temperatures, or after a heavy meal.

Angina is a sign that the body is at an increased risk of heart attack or cardiac arrest.

The three types of angina are stable, unstable, and variant (Prinzmetal’s). Knowing the differences between them is important, because each has different symptoms and requires different treatment.

Stable Angina: This is the most common type of angina. It occurs when the heart is working harder than usual. Stable angina has a regular pattern. Learning how to recognize the pattern can help predict when the pain will occur. The pain usually goes away in a few minutes after resting or taking angina medicine. Stable angina isn’t a heart attack, but it makes one more likely in the future.

Unstable Angina: Unstable angina doesn’t follow any pattern. It can occur with or without physical exertion. The chest pain is unexpected and usually occurs while at rest. The angina occurs more frequently, can feel more severe, last longer, or come on with minimal activity, and isn’t relieved by rest or medication. Unstable angina is very dangerous and needs treatment. It is a sign that a heart attack may happen soon.

Variant (Prinzmetal’s) Angina: Variant angina is rare. It usually occurs while at rest between midnight and early morning. The pain can be severe, but is relieved by medication.
